AIXITA

12th-century ruins with strategic views, signposted trails and part of an ancient defensive network featuring castles and towers. Ideal for historical walks.

The most common starting point is Etxeberri (Arakil), in the Arakil Valley, from where a signposted trail climbs towards the mountains. Dating from the 12th century, Aixita formed part of the Kingdom of Navarre's defensive network alongside castles and towers that warned of threats using smoke, fire and sound. It controlled strategic passes in the Sakana Valley and was used in conflicts between rival lineages until its demolition in 1512 following the Castilian conquest.
