BEHITIKO LANDA'S OAK TREE

A monumental oak tree with a hollow trunk and great height, declared a Natural Monument in 1991, stands out for its vitality, age and exceptional size.

This monumental oak remains remarkably active: every year it produces new shoots and acorns, demonstrating its vigour despite its advanced age. Although its exact age is unknown, the great thickness of its trunk confirms it is one of the oldest oaks in Navarre.
Listed as a Natural Monument (MN.09), it has exceptional dimensions: 3.05 metres in diameter at the base and 2.75 metres at 1.30 metres height; over 29 metres tall with a crown approximately 18 by 17.80 metres.
The trunk is almost completely hollow with a large lateral crack, features common in trees of this age. It is believed to have been pruned in the past, due to it’s unusual shape; an imposing trunk with a relatively sparse crown. Also observed in other monumental oaks in the area. Despite this, its general health is good, with a significant portion of the crown healthy and active. Declared a Natural Monument in 1991, it is a valuable testament to the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
